John Edmund Harrison, age 82, passed away on October 8, 2025, after a long illness. John was born on April 18, 1943, to Ellen and Frederick Harrison in Mansfield, England. He grew up in Liverpool, England, and graduated from Guildford School of Art in Surrey, England. He immigrated to Canada in 1968. John worked as a university professor for 20 years in Montreal and Ottawa, and then co-ran a print and web-based advertising firm with his wife, Valerie Simpson Harrison, in Brockville, Ontario for over 30 years. Having finally given up work after five decades, John described his retirement as “Freedom 75”.

He is remembered by Valerie, to whom he was married for 44 years, and their children Rachel, Elisabeth, and Johanna; his children from his first marriage, Henrietta, Matthew, and Isabella; his children’s partners, 10 grandchildren, and his extended family and friends.

John was a talented photographer, visual artist, and graphic designer. He loved his wife, family, and friends, and was proud of them all. He was a humanist and existentialist who strongly related to Eeyore. He enjoyed reading about history, listening to classical music (with the notable exception of the dreaded organ music show), discussing politics (nearly always in agreement with his wife and children’s views), drinking coffee and eating treats, connecting with friends online, and relaxing with his beloved cats.

In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Gananoque & District Humane Society in his memory.
